This piece appeared in Comic Art in 2004.  As the magazine is now (sadly) defunct, I’m posting the article here.  Until The Purple Crayon and a Hole to Dig: The Lives of Crockett Johnson and Ruth Krauss appears in 2012, this essay is the most thorough account of Johnson’s life available.  Enjoy!

The above article represents the state of my research in 2004. Â While the essay is accurate, I’ve learned a great deal since then – so, if interested in learning more, please check out the book (due from the University Press of Mississippi in mid 2012). Â Thank you.

Small correction. Crockett Johnson’s old address in Queens is currently called 104-11 39th AVENUE, not 39th Street. 104th is the “Street.”
Thanks for the correction! Happily, I already have this correct in the book manuscript (I’ve just double checked the ms. & checked both GoogleMaps and a 1997 Hagstrom print map of Queens). But if you see any other errors, please do let me know. There are at least a couple of other small errors in the essay — both concern spelling.
